There is an excellent yet dated post on social media marketing on StuntDubl

They look to be putting themselves up for auction. You can always tell that a web 2.0 company wants to sell itself when they start trying to tap into your gmail or hotmail contacts to spam invites to try to boost their user base.
Then they can go to the acquirer and say “look how many users we have and our rate of new signups is sloping upwards and at this rate we will have 300 million unique users in 2 years. There fore we deserve a valuation like facebook. ” I think the people that will lose money on these we 2.0 companies will be the acquiring media companies, which doesn’t really bring a tear to my eye.
